Artist Phung Huynh’s Portraits Illuminate the Refugee Experience

Artist Phung Huynh shared the stories behind her work in a recent talk about “KIN: Portraits from the Escalette Collection,” on exhibit in the Guggenheim Gallery, next to Moulton Hall. Her portraits on donut boxes explore the Cambodian and Vietnamese refugee experience — and nod to the fact that nearly 90% of California’s independent donut shops are owned by Cambodian and Cambodian-American families.

"To hear her speak with such empathy for so many people was heartwarming, and to see her approach these moments with kindness was motivating."
