Chapman Community Honored at State Women of Distinction Celebrations

State honors spotlight student and staff leaders extending Chapman’s impact beyond campus.

Members of the Chapman University community were recently recognized by state leaders for their impact through service, leadership, and community engagement.

At Senator Steven Choi’s Women of Distinction Celebration, two Chapman representatives were honored:

  • Lucy Dominguez, a Religious Studies student, was recognized for her work with the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange and her extensive community service, including refugee support, pandemic-era food distribution, and advancing STEM equity—all rooted in her commitment to family, faith, and social justice.
  • Essraa Nawar, assistant dean for Library Engagement and Program Initiatives and chair of Chapman’s AI Committee, was honored for her leadership in education, women’s empowerment, interfaith dialogue, and community well-being, bridging technology, storytelling, and human-centered support.

In addition, Senator Tom Umberg recognized Gabriela Castañeda, Ph.D., vice president of the First-Generation and Promising Futures Program, for her leadership in higher education and her work with nonprofit organizations across the City of Orange and Orange County.

Together, these recognitions highlight the meaningful contributions of Chapman community members making a difference both on campus and throughout the area.
